I think anyone can with a modern camera get a well exposed photo, unless you're in manual, you just point and shoot, there's simply no real excuse for not getting that right, or almost right - the camera processor is doing all the hard work really

To understand exposure I agree you need to know the different ways and why's of changing settings to get a well exposed photo that also isnt too noisy, too slow a shutter speed or an aperture that's inappropriate

I don't have the 80-200 but have had a play with it.

The underlying problem here is not the lens but the lack of light. At ISO620, 1/10s and f/4.5 you are going to struggle with a portrait. The only way around it is to introduce some more light.

Olympus Pen F with Metabones Speed Booster and Laowa 12mm f/2.8 or Voigtlander 10.5mm f/0.95 or Nikon D800 with the Laowa 12mm f/2.8. The need to keep in touch with the past is a Nikon Photomic FTn or Nikon F2A and a Nikkor 25-50mm f/4 AI

I used to have a 80-200 afs and now have a 70-200 afs

Both delivered perfect exposures, as did my 18-55 kit lens 5 years ago

    Thanks weiwuwei

I am only a beginner with portraits and need LOTS more practice.

As far as the 18-105 goes, it is a much better lens than most give credit but the lens I use most often with portraits is the 60mm f/2 Tamron. It is nice to have a zoom and the 80-200 is an absolute ripper of a lens and great value for money. It was on my shopping list but now no longer an essential so maybe one day.

The biggest problem I have had (other than not having enough depth of field when shooting available light), is having too much light under studio conditions.
