    "Lag in Threads ?"

Hi Guys, This would most probably be aimed for Kym, Just lately the site seems to be lagging , This is a new problem, It never used to happen before the Server change , Best thing is to give you a screen grab, It comes good reasonably quickly so It's been hard to catch, But I got this one - Bill

I've not seen that myself. This is very hard to diagnose unless it can be re-produced.

Please advise when it happens and any special circumstances.

It maybe part of the vBulletin 4.1.5 upgrade which happened after the server upgrade.

I haven't had any issues with lag like William describes but I keep getting the "Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to another page." message popping up at the top of the page which has only started happening since the switch over. It doesn't happen on any other websites, just this one

The site uses re-directs and Ajax for the new post editor.
I'm guessing you have a Firefox setting that needs to be changed.
I.e. Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page" needs to be off.

Quite normal Bill. The browser of your choice is not "quick enough" to process the compiled code send to it, and "translate" the visual page you see now.

It's not really a problem, you just have to be patient

Yep, you are faster than the computer.

You might also have the following setting: display 100 post per page....

The browser is working hard to download + "translate" the rest of the 98 posts... but you already start the scrolling down (I do it all the time! )

I've had this problem before too, the browser seems to be still downloading without redrawing. When the browser doesn't have enough of the HTML for some parts of a page it can't complete the drawing and formatting properly.
I find it resolves itself once more of the HTML is available.

    But it's full of Wisdom...

Seriously, it just trying to draw up the fancy looking page, hence it takes time.

Come to think of it, you MIGHT also have some plug-in installed to make the rendering process slower than it should (rendering is the part I was talking about the "downloading + translate")

That is just plain weird. I normally use Firefox and test with IE 9 and Opera.
    I've never seen that happen.

Can you try another browser for a day or two?

Kym, with the modern web pages that has so many client side scripts, I don't think you should be worry about it?

I use IE8 + Firefox + Chrome (Chrome is my fav.)

IE is the worst re leg

Firefox and Chrome is about the same and it's very minor, and I have display 100 threads per page setting.

What may help is my next performance tuning step (which have been happening incrementally over the last 2 weeks).
Since we have moved onto out own server I can configure the Web server (Apache) at the root level.

    Tech note:
I was planning to enable mod_deflate and mod_expires (and turn off php compression which won't be needed due to mod_deflate)...
which means that all text traffic between your browser and AP server will be compressed and better cached by the browser.

This should improve page load times, esp. on slower connections and PCs.

I may bring this forward to one evening this week.

Just FYI, it's been doing the same on my pc for the last week or so.

    I'm using ie8 on XP.

(there is something up with my work pc that is severly affecting performance though. Haven't worked out what it is yet.)
