Ausphotography: Server move THIS FRIDAY (22nd July 2011) : Countdown : ONE DAY!

I have created this new thread to keep members informed of the site relocation to a new server this Friday (22nd July 2011)

Thanks everyone who donated to AP, bought from the AP shop and site advertisers to allow the funds for this.

The server has been purchased and Kym is working on getting it set-up exactly as we need ready to move the site on Friday.

We will use this thread to keep you informed, right through the process. Whilst the site is off-line, you can get updates on the progress via the following sources.

    Ausphotography Twitter: #Ausphotograph
Facebook: (you will need to add me, please PM for details)
Google+ : (you will need to add me, please PM for details)

If anyone doesn't use any of the above and wants to be kept informed, send me a PM with your email address, I will send out a few broadcast emails during the move to keep members informed of how it is progressing.

    Update 2011-07-21
    Plan tracking...

The plan (as confirmed with our hosting provider)
    • Monday 2011-07-18
      • Announce the move to all members via a site notice
      • Buy the new server
      • Request the TTL (Time To Live) on our domain names to be set to 3600 seconds (1 hour)
      • Prepare the existing server to redirect to the new server via IP address
    • Wednesday 2011-07-20
      • Confirm everything with the Hosting Provider
      • Initial setup of server
    • Thursday 2011-07-21
      • Set the overnight backup to leave AP off-line upon completion
    • Friday 2011-07-22 (starting at ~6:00am)
      • Clear the search index table (its huge)
      • Redirect DNS domains to new server IP address
      • Tell the hosting provider to move AP to the new server @ 8:00am
      • Wait for move (30 minutes)
      • Test everything on the new server
      • Regenerate the search index (~2 hours)
      • Enable IP address based access to AP on the new server
      • Run a backup of AP on the new server
      • Put AP back online on the new server
      • Turn on the IP address based redirect from the old server with advisory messages
    • Beyond Saturday 2011-07-23
      • Clean up the old server (remove everything except the redirects)
      • Start configuring performance and feature improvements we could not do on the shared host (on going through August)
        I.e.
        - Generate remaining attachment thumbnails (~35,000)
        - memcache for the forum settings etc.
        - Sphinx Search (much faster to index)
        - MySQL Database tuning
        - Apache web server tuning (cache etc)

We will keep you all informed as things progress.

    Hi,

Do you have an estimate of how long AP will be offline?

The site will be taken down around 3.30am Friday morning and the overnight backup will be done. This is an automatic process that we do every night. Normally, once the backup is complete the site automatically brings itself back online. This Friday it will not. We are forcing it to remain off-line from after the backup. At this stage we are working on getting the server ready for the move. On Friday morning the site will be transferred from the old server to the new one.

Once it has moved, we will do a series of checks and tests to make sure everything is good, do another backup and then bring the site back on-line.

This is a very simplified overview of the process.

However the big issue for members is the "Name Servers", Name Servers tell your computer and ISP where to find the site (via it's IP address). What happens is that once the site is moved, we update the Name Servers for AP telling the net what IP address to look at when someone types in www.ausphotography.net.au. Now the bit that can slow down your access is related to this. Your ISP maintains a database of all the Name Server details for all the sites worldwide. Some ISP do a check of the Name Server database every hour or so, and update, other seem to do it ever 4 hours, and one Aussie one is known to do it once every few days.

Until your ISP does a check against the global Name Server updates and grabs the new name servers for AP, you will not be able to access the site. So the bit that will slow some members down will be at their ISP. Cause if your ISP hasn't updated their Name Servers database when you type www.ausphotography.net.au, your ISP will go looking for the site where it used to be..and not find it.

We hope to minimise this by having a redirect on the old server to the new one, but members could experience issues if their ISP isn't all that pro-active in maintaining its Name Server databases.

Now having said all of this, in a good scenario, we should be online by middle of the day... earlier if everything goes perfectly, later if we have 'issues'. We will try and make the move as smooth as possible, and minimise the outage.

I've set the DNS nameserver TTL (Time To Live) to 3600 seconds, this means the name change will be quick.

I'm expecting to have the new server up around lunchtime. Worst case we will be up later on Friday.

I put + into a google search and it came up with nothing.

Type in "Google Plus One". That'll give you heaps of responses.

Of course if you're like me, you'll be none the wiser afterwards ......

I think I'm losing the plot ... some of these new concepts go right through to the keeper.

I thought that too, but the other day I jumped on using IE (so I was logged out etc) and it appeared to be open for joining up without an invite (the screen has certainly changed from the "leave your details and we'll get back to you" screen). Haven't seen anything in the news about it being opened up yet, and the welcome screen still talks about a trial, but it seems as though anyone can join up.

I was not serious, I just thought it funny that a + in the search engine google did not find google +.
But more to the point, I am shutting down now and hope that we can all join in again tomorrow, sometime, and good luck to Rick and Kym with the move tomorrow. Hope it all goes smoothly and we are all back again soon.
You do a great job, and I admire you for your work.
So its good evening from me.
