Conflicting advice about grey market lenses

    Hi all,

A subject that has been done to death - the warranty on grey market lenses.

It seems like everyone thinks there is international warranty on grey lenses, but not on bodies.

I've heard recently that within the last three months or so, this international warranty was removed, and now lenses are bound by the same country specific warranty as bodies do.

Anyone know if there is any truth to this, or the type of warranty on grey market lenses?

(Thinking of buying a grey Canon lens if that helps, but placed this thread in the main section because others may find it useful)

    http://www.canon.com.au/en-AU/Suppor...Warranty-Terms

Item 4 states 'Canon offers an international warranty on non-digital Canon compact cameras, non-digital Canon SLR camera bodies, Canon lenses for all SLR cameras, Canon Speedlites and Canon photographic accessories only.'

Doesn't appear to be any change..

I believe Nikon will warrant lenses internationally, but who cares if they dont?

Just send it back to market of origin and you will pay freight, thats it. If the saving is great enough, then international or not on the warranty card should be of no concern.

Warranty links for camera / lens manufacturers are HERE

If you want a full and detailed explanation of what you are covered for under warranty please contact the manufacturer / distributor directly.

Kerry, read on in that section, you have only quoted 1/2 of it.

Nikon, Fuji, Nikkor, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and too many other bits and pieces to list.

Regardless of the 'official' line, if you go grey, deal with one of the major dealers like D-D photographics or Cameras Direct etc. They cover the 12 mth warranty in house.
Far more reliable to deal with than most of the longtongwong sites around the net.

Thanks Andrew..I have to say it is all a bit confusing and having purchased a 24-105L in Phnom Penh in April, I decided to call Canon for my own peace of mind - though I hope I certainly won't need to act upon the info! They said the warranty on EF/EF-S lenses is honored in Australia, but warranties on bodies aren't..But as has been already mentioned, I would suggest you call directly and it probably wouldn't hurt to take note of the name of the person you speak to.
