same lens, same spec - just cheaper to manufacture so Canon can $$ in more

PS. Just saw andylo's post. Did the earlier one have ULD glass elements in it too?
A fiend is after just such a lens and I sort of steered him away from "kit" lenses.

They don't seem to be promising anything aside from the cosmetic changes, Ameerat, so it's a pretty safe bet that it will be pretty similar. I am familiar with the old model. It's a pretty fair companion to the 18-55 IS - i.e, sharp enough and really quite remarkable at the price, but very light, flimsy, terrible baby concrete mixer pretending to be a focus motor .... all things that are acceptable in a $100 kit lens, but harder to live with in something belonging to this focal length class, where accurate focus becomes critical.
Surely Sigma or Tamron or someone have something better and not too dear.
So long story short - if you already have one, don't bother to "upgrade". Chances are you are actually downgrading!
Not sure if you guys know about it, but the 18-55 IS also have a mkII. Exactly the same thing - same spec and everything, but cheaper to produce.
The following I am not 100% sure:
The mk1's of 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS are make in Japan. But the mkII's are all make in Taiwan.
My 18-55IS and 55-250IS (both I have sold) were made in Japan.
