NZ gets tornadoes from time to time. There was a pretty bad one in Greymouth about 4 years ago that caused a lot of damage, though luckily no deaths.
More usual in the North Island though, so Auckland getting one is probably not all that surprising.
Haven't the poor Kiwis had a bad trot so far this year.
I feel very sorry for them with the earthquakes in the south and now tornados in the north.
It'll all be forgotten when they win the Rugby World Cup, though.
