    Stolen Camera Finder

I found this a few days ago and thought I would post it up in the hope it can help someone out.

    Stolen Camera Finder

I uploaded a photo from my stolen D300. It didn't find any files, but I gave them an email address to email me if they do.

A pretty nifty thing, found it on Gizmodo.

Pretty resourceful and handy tool indeed unless of course, the perputrator is educated and is aware to strip all exif data before posting it on the net. However, I doubt thieves would know how to, let alone be aware of this site's existence. Regardless, pretty good find!

Hmm! I'd hesitate (and even be lost) to use this or any such tool from who-know-where/who/for what purpose.
Yes, I went and checked out Matt Burns' site and it seems earnest enough, but how easy to copy such a site, or hack it? Somebody else gets your serial number anyhow.
    Hm.
    CC, Image editing OK.

Such a lot of store to put in the ignorance of thieves. From much daily evidence they don't appear to be a disappearing breed.

Ok, found the camera SN putting a photo on this site http://regex.info/exif.cgi that shows a loooooot of exif data.
Unoftunately the search did not show any photo of my stolen camera on the web...but it took almost no time to search, don´t think its a very complete check.

    regards

I have looked at the EXIF data on many photos and don't recall seeing the serial number on any. so I wouldn't bother.

Has anyone got it to work?

The serial number is contained in the raw data of every exif.

    <aux:SerialNumber>805xxxxx</aux:SerialNumber>

Look in the raw data of the exif...it's there. I don't mean RAW file, I mean the actual raw data. That's where it is.
