    Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5 - 5.6G IF-ED for D700

    Hi All

I have the Nikor 70-300 VR which I had believed to be compatible with a full frame camera (D700). I currently have the D90 which I am thinking of upgrading. While I read that this lens is compatible (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-300-vr.htm) and talking to camera stores; I recently came to know that this is NOT the case - that the 70-300 VR is only a DX lens (although this is not written on the lens).

I am confused - cam anyone help me out?

Also I am thinking of investing in a wide angle Zoom lens that is also compatible with the D700 (I have the 24-70mm). I saw the Nikon 14-24mm - is this compatible? Are there any Sigma lenses that I could buy instead (much cheaper option)?

    Thanks a lot - DJ

    Hi

the 70-300 VR is a full-frame lens. All DX only lenses have DX in the model name.

You find that all lenses that are DX will say they are....as Davidd said.....the 14-24mm 2.8 is an FX lens.

This should help you with your lens needs and what is available FX and DX

I use the 70-300VR on D700 & D3, and it is certainly an FX lens. A pretty good one for the zoom range it covers too.

Thanks Guys - I think it's confirm that 70-300 IS a FX lens.

With the 14-24 - I had a look today and found that no filters can be attached to it - I tend to use a lot of GND filters for my landscape photos. I also saw the 16-35 VR Nikon lens - looks good except it's not as wide as the 14. I was also wondering if there's any third party wide angle zoom lenses that I can use (would be a big money saver) on the D700...

I was considering the same lens and was told by all the experts (Pro's and retailers) that it can be used on either DX or FX bodies.

    Yeah definitely can be used.

On an FX. Try a 12-24 Sigma F4.5-5.6, theres also a great Tokina 16-28 F2.8 which is a bit cheaper than the 14-24. Both good wide more budget options. The 12-24 would definitely be a money saver (theres a new version of this as well) can be had for for sub 500. The 16-28 can be easily had new 750-900.
