    Upcoming site improvements in the next few months. AP software strategy. Upgrade Sat 9th

    As you may know AP runs on vB (vBulletin, not the beer, and I prefer Coopers anyway);
    and I thought I'd let you know what changes are coming from vB in the next few months that might be of interest to AP members.

    vB4.1.3 is in beta available and contains about 140 bug fixes, of which few are important to AP,
    some improving performance and the rest of being little or no consequence due to being related to the CMS, Blog and Facebook Connect that we don't use.

    One noticeable change for vB4.1.3 will be a confirmation pop up when you click 'Mark Forums Read'; which is there due to the fact 'Mark Forums Read' cannot be undone.

    vB4.1.4 is slated to have the new WYSIWYG editor based on CKeditor which will have an auto save feature.
    It will be like using word to edit posts.
    This has been delayed for about 3 releases, as vB are putting much more into their test QA processes than before.
    We may consider making this the site default, the old plain text will still be available.
    CKeditor is embedded into software products from major vendors like IBM, Oracle and Adobe; and is available for MS Sharepoint.
    It is recognised as the best of class web WYSIWYG editor. You can try a demo on the CKeditor site.

    Beyond vB4.1.4 are things like improved mobility skins and an improved vB mobile app (iPhone only) are expected.
    We have decided to go with tapatalk, and as we have to pay for the vB mobile option, plus members have to pay for the app, we think tapatalk should remain as our ongoing mobile option.
    Tapatalk is also multi-platform.

    For the techos, at the back-end we will be have switched to PHP 5.3.x, which should have no visible impact, but does give me some possibilities for future developments.

    We don't expect any major feature changes as between the Forum, Competitions and the Library (wiki);
    we think we are delivering a great photographic forum experience.
    That said, feedback and new ideas are always welcome.

    We are NOT going to implement the vBulletin iPhone application because we have already implemented the tapatalk application as our mobile option.
    Tapatalk is multi-platform including iPhone. You can get it now.

    We will implement future versions of the mobile skin so small format browsers have a better display.

    Just search for 'tapatalk' and install on your iPhone. Then search in the app for Ausphotography and away you go. AP has been tapatalk enabled for about 18 months now

    I have downloaded Tapatalk $3.99 - too easy!

    The interface works well and makes the browsing experience better than using the alternative.

    Thanks Rick and the rest of the team!

    Further information:

    We have been running on PHP 5.3.3 for the last two days without any apparent issues.

    Also: We have added the spoiler tag to the toolbar, its been available for a while, but the toolbar tool is new.

    It lets you hide text. Eg.

    Old Photographers never die...

    Yeah, it hides 'stuff'. So you can post about something, and hide part of that post away, and members have to click it, if they want to find out more. Whole range of purposes. Similar to friends telling you the story and outcome of a movie you are going to see, and ruining the ending by giving away the twist at the end etc. Using the spolier feature, means only those that click it, can see what it says and if they are then unhappy having read it, it is their own fault, cause they clicked it in the first place.

    Spoilers are intended for joke punchlines and potentially slightly rude things so member have to opt into seeing the text.
