As a newbie to the site I read with interest all threads and opinions on this subject. I have been shooting with a 3/4 frame for 2 years now and finally in the position to purchase a second body. I also have been waiting to see what Nikon do with the D800 (can't wait any longer) but made the decision last week to take the plunge as the D700 price is so good at present and have committed to buying. I feel with the recent events in Japan the replacement model may be delayed and stock will start to short in the near future and I feel when released will end up out of my price range. I spoke with a few D700 users and everyone recommends this camera. Like said above I don't need for video so 12mp is fine, and I have the D7000 (which I upgraded from D90 late last year) and some good lens that can fill in the gaps. I am now looking towards more at quality lens than bodies in the future.

I am flat out finding an issue that needs addressing in the D700 unless you want video, although higher resolution would be my most high want.
However I think the D300S is more the one that needs updating to make it a cross between the D7000 and D300s. Same spec as D700 but in a crop sensor.
A marriage in heaven ! Low noise of D7000 and handling, ergo and weather resistance of D300s/D700.
The D700 does really need upgrading as the only real competitor is Canon 5Dmk3 which is just higher res and video but not weather resistant.
Anyhow, with what is happening in Japan re:earthquake & tsunami I doubt whether anything much is going to be released in the near future.
Hopefully things will turn around but with 20,000+ people gone they have other priorities.
    Cheers Neil

Having bought a D90 a couple of years ago as pretty much a mid entry level beast, I can say with no fear of contradiction that I have no need for video (others can make up their own mind on this) and I've never used it. You want video...buy a video camera. Never the twain shall meet in my opinion. The D90 is a ripper for what it is (mind you I've been Nikon since uni days in 1980 so pardon my partiality), and I've been more than pleased with it. I've been looking at the D700 for a couple of months now (procrastinate procrastinate....etc etc), and my suspicion has been that it's on the way out with a successor waiting in the wings. From what I've now read...this D800 as the successor has NOT hit my g-spot one little bit. I'd just love a D3, but can't bring myself to sell the kids to science to fund it (temptation is there though....ahem). Anyhoo, I am in total agreement with I@M above...dollar wise and feature wise, now is the time to buy a D700 if you understand it and know your craft. I'm putting my order on one tomorrow.
    *Sigh*

I was at a camera club meeting the other night and so was a rep from Nikon and he was asked about the D800 and he said he had heard rumours too but would not say any more or less than that . He also said that the Nikon plant in Japan had not been damaged by the recent events but a lot of suppliers had been affected and with power shortages ect the production had been affected thats all i know

Has anyone heard any more recent rumors on this topic?

I'm looking at changing systems in the very near future and the D700 is the camera I've been looking at, but I might consider waiting if the D800 isn't too far away.

You may be wise to wait at least a month.
The D800 will not be available anytime soon, but
an announcement of D4, D400, D800 should lower the price of the D700.
The supply to demand ratio in the USA has driven the price up 20-40% in the last 8 months.

I have noticed that the second hand market for these has gone a bit crazy.
I wasn't aware that the price in stores had been driven up by that much.

I almost went into a camera store this week to buy a new D700, but then read somewhere about the D800 rumors.

    Cheers.

I've crashed and burnt with my predictions but... oh well, I'll have another go at it :P
D4 and D800 by the end of the year.
D700 used prices stay high ~2k for a good low actuation one.

At this point, an announcement of a new FullFrame camera by any company would be BIG news.

There is not even rumors of rumors anymore.

Have we given up hope or was that swept away with the Tsunami?

Here's the latest rumor on the D800. Just a couple of hours ago.

The name will be Nikon D800, the sensor will be 36MP (99% probability)

The only thing you can be 99% sure of is that this is truly a Rumor.

I have trouble believing those specs. Seems odd for them to bump the resolution up THAT high. Who needs 36 MP? Sounds like that would more likely be the sensor for the D4X. A 36MP sensor would not have near the same low-light capabilities as the D700. Common sense says that they will be trying to target the same, or similar, market as the D700 was targeting. A 36MP sensor with poor low light ability and only 4fps is not a replacement for the D700 as far as im concerned. The D700 does 5fps FF and up to 8fps with the grip.

I liked it better when we were speculating about a D700s &/or x
After two plus years, we do not have a clue what Nikon is going to do with the D800.

If 36mp proves to be true, I keep wondering whether there might be 18mp or 9mp modes using pixel binning (combined, not throw out). If memory serves me right, D1x had pixel binning in one of the axis. 2 pro generations later, the technology would have improved.
Perhaps 36mp normal mode, 9mp 2 stop better noise and better colour accuracy (1R+2G+1B binned into 1RGB pixel).
