Turn on XMP sidecar files in Lightroom?

Do users of LR turn on the XMP sidecar file system, or do you just rely on your catalogue/s? for linking your edits/keywords etc?

I am intrigued as to why you would turn this on when you have the option to backup the catalogue on a regular basis which in effect would become valuable if the catalogue file becomes corrupted you would just need to rely on your backup of the original

    Your thoughts?
