    Canon Teleconverter

I am considering purchasing one of the new Canon 2x teleconverters, but I would like the version 111. Plenty of places seem to have only the version 11. I am assuming of course that version 111 has actually been released.

Has anybody actually purchased and used a version 111 as yet?

This is a new item and not in stock yet. Currently we do not have a scheduled delivery date from the manufacturer

Only a marginal difference I think. I have not found any comparisions between the two yet, however that said:

    • The Mark III has an improved optical design and would sell around the $500 mark.
    • The Mark II would become discontinued and its price would be around the $400 mark.

As the difference would only be marginal, you'll need to decide if $100 is worth it.
In my opinion, as teleconverters degrade image quality, any improvement would be worth it, hence my decision it get the Mark III.

Generally the "L" series, but only on the longer foal lengths. AF doesn't work on all either, some get all focal points, some centre only, others are MF only.

I am also looking at the new TC when it becomes available in Oz. I have a fairly old 1.4x Canon which recently I have been attaching to both my 70-200 f/4 L IS and to my Canon 300 f/4L IS with surprising results. This was taken through grubby glass at Taronga zoo with the TC attached to my 300 f/4 L IS

U.S. sites are now taking pre-orders so deliveries can’t be too far away.

Just noticed on B&H's website that they are listed as 'in stock' and are priced at USD$499
Have a look at the image though and the wording is different on the barrel (I don't see Made in Japan there).
I presume that this is a 'genuine' one?

Can you see the difference between the two 1.4's? It must be my old eyes but there doesn’t seem to be much of a change.

The new MKIII Converters wii only be an advantage on the "New" 300 f/2.8, 400 f/2.8, 500 f/4 and 600 f/4, the last two have not even released their specs. yet far less their price and availability.

The Cons. will have a computer chip which will talk to the new lenses so unless you plan to sell your kids for medical experiments to buy these lenses, stick with the tried and tested MKII.

Canon tele-converters are only compatible with the following lenses:

    1. any L-series prime 135mm or longer;
    2. all four 70-200mm L zooms;
    3. the 100-400mm L zoom; and
    4. the 400/4 DO IS.

Just to add to Xenedis post, there are other issues. The following quote is taken from "The Digital Picture" review of the 1.4 II.

    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...er-Review.aspx

"Another negative aspect to shooting with the Canon EF 1.4x II Extender attached is the resulting reduction in autofocus speed. This can be an issue if you are shooting in low light and/or are using a lens that is not very fast focusing (such as the Canon 180 L lens mentioned above).

Though most compatible lenses have widest apertures of at least f/4, some of the longer ones have an f/5.6 native maximum aperture. Since most non-1-Series Canon camera bodies need a minimum wide open aperture setting of f/5.6 for autofocus to work, only Canon 1-Series camera bodies will autofocus these f/8 1.4x combinations. The lens and extender combo can always be used in manual focus mode. A narrow maximum wide aperture creates a dark viewfinder that makes manual focusing even harder
    ."

So if you do not have a 1-Series body AF may not work and the problem is worse using the 2 extender

Let us not forget the Kenko converters which being non invasive can be used with any Canon Lens and IMO they equal the Canon Cons. in quality and IQ.

Has anyone managed to get a 1.4x Mark III ?

I have repeatedly been told by Discount Digital Photographics that they expect some to come in 'next week'. It's been 3 months !
I also note that Ted's and Paxtons do not have this newer model, only the old Mark II.

Does anyone have any idea when they will become available (I'm in Sydney) ?

    Many Thanks.

I have the 2X Canon mk 111. It works a treat. I have no problems with auto focus on
my F2.8 lenses, including the Sigma 120-300.
Gives me great reach with the 7D and the 400 F2.8 lens.
    Well worth the money.
    cheers Kerro
I shoot with Canon cameras and Canon and Sigma lenses and now a Mavic Pro too
