    canon 24mm f2.8

am considering the above lens on a 40d body for w/f night shots - meteors...are there any reason i should not get it -for the price it is attractive, can't stretch funds to 10-22 L glass, are there any other options?

Hmm... 10-22 is NOT L glass. It just has very good optical performance.

The 24mm f/2.8 on ebay is about mid $300.

For about $200 more, you can get a Tamron 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 (current version), or Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 (previous version) for $150 more.

That is assuming you doing mostly Landscape and distortion is not your concern.

If you don't really need too much of the wide end, I would opt for a 2nd hand Canon 17-40 f4L! They are pricing (2nd hand) at around mid $500 to $600 and it is a professional grade lens.

There is no such thing as L glass. There are L (Luxury) lenses, which use a range of body and glass types...and it would be wrong to assume that L lenses are optically better than non-L.

The 24mm prime and 10-20mm zooms do not appear to be alternatives. The prime is almost a normal lens on a 40D, whereas the zooms are ultra-wide. How wide do you want?
