Editing photo's

Hi all, so i used my new canon 1000D today for the first time & i want to post some pics but they are to big & i need to shrink them so i can post them. I dont have any programs atm. help me please!

If you are just after something to shrink your photos then something smaller may be worth looking at. Give Ifranview a go, it's excellent at batch conversions and shrinking photos. http://www.irfanview.com/

before I started using Photoshop and Bridge I was using the free ware faststone: http://www.faststone.org/download.htm

For really quick resizing I just use a Windows Explorer plug in which resizes to small medium or large just by using the menu you get when you 'right click' on an image in Explorer. I find this handy for quickly posting to web or email.

I use the free windows resizer 'plug in' for emailing - its an easy right click, and it auto saves.
The original isnt affected.

I've always used ACDSee, but only because I had the program. Now after a reformat of cx will probably follow the herd and go with the windows resizer 'plug in' with Thunderbird.

Gimp is good, and easy to resize after youv'e done any editing.

Cath, what brand of camera do you use?
Some of the programs that come with the camera are quite capable at basic editing ( along the same lines as Picasa at least ) and in some cases may even provide better raw file conversion to JPEG if you are using that format.
There are quite a few capable "free" programs available and then you can venture into the realms of the complex editing programs available at moderate to substantial cost with features that require plenty of education to master.

FastStone: http://www.faststone.org download and Ifranview http://www.irfanview.com download have great batch processing including resizing.
I use http://picasa.google.com download as a viewer and shrinker but for some reason RAW images on my old Canon 400D sometimes come out purple. The people feature is awesome.

Digital Photo Professional came with my camera and is quite good but slow.

Thanks guys, i downloaded GIMP for a look & found it pretty useful, but i managed to score a copy of Photoshop off a mate at work. Now i just need to work out how to use it.

ha, be prepared for years of learning. I have used it for about 8 years now, and i still learn new ways to do things. It is one HUGE program. Try getting Scott Kelby's "Adobe Photoshop for Digital Photographers" for the version you have, it is brilliant to learn from
