Anyone know a good tutorial to make a decent website?

i wanna make one for my photography....

and would like it to look professional..

I would recommend getting a copy of Dreamweaver and some good books on it.

Rick mentioned Dreamweaver, which is an excellent package but has a fair learning curve, which I am in the middle of. My only thought is what capacity do you want your site to be? Although Dreamweaver will handle it you may end up spending much more on the storage space through a commercial web site.

Can I suggest you have a look at Phanfare (see my link below). It has unlimited storage and the site can be configured to be quite proffessional. You can even set it up so that clients can purchase through the site.

I first found it through a couple of photogs that were promoted on fredmiranda.com and have been very happy with it to date.

Only a suggestion - have a look and make up your own mind.

It really depends what sort of a website you're intending to build.

If it's just a blog, then blogger is probably the quickest and easiest way to do it.

Alternatively, if you want a photo gallery, then a website hosting Gallery2 is a great way to go.

If you're intending to sell photos, then RedBubble are intending to provide functionality to allow you to have a customisable site on a subdomain (ie, martybugs.redbubble.com or similar).

If you can provide more info about your requirements (and your current experience with web development / programming), we'll be in a better position to provide some recommendations.

(I'm a software engineer, so I wrote website and photo gallery from scratch in Perl, but that's not an option for everyone....)

yer sorry..

i want a site to sell photo's..

i want it professional and not running from somewhere else...

so yer..

marty, my skills arent great, but i am willing to give stuff a go, but know bit of html, css, java, c++...

mmm

but each is limited..

I use the older version for mine and it's as easy as falling off a log.

If you want an integrated shopping basket / checkout facility, then it can get complex...as you need to integrate it into the rest of the site.

I'd recommend you have a look at the various free CMS solutions available, such as Drupal.
The CMS solutions typically have many plugins available for extending the functionality, including adding photo galleries, comments, shopping basket, etc.

I use gallery 2, and it was easy to install and ive recently updated to latest version, and that was easy too. It also has a similar thing to what Mpot said with drupal. There is a wide range of extra plugins and themes available, you just go into your admin section and downoad and install the plugins you want.

i would say dreamweaver aswell, the way i create websites is all in photoshop and image ready first for the layout/design, slice it and import it to dreamweaver, search google on photoshop web layout and slicing.

We are in the process of setting up our website at the moment. We purchased a flash template for $50. After a bit of playing with macromedia flash and learning how to change the template we have come up with a pretty professional website with "dynamic" galleries.

I would have never been able to create this kind of flash website from scratch and IMO it is $50 well spent as I now own it. It isnt quite finished yet, will be going on line soon. I will post a link when it is and you can check it out if you are interested.

adobe indesign cs3 has a html export, so you can export your cool layout into dreamweaver and edit it as a webpage. this is what I am planning on doing in the near future.

I have just found some of the coolest website designs I think I have seen.

Check them out - the company is called livebooks. They are really cool.

I know the price tag they are asking is a little silly, but if people were looking for design ideas this is the place to go.

and after setting it up i added a proof section to it (has a shopping cart etc) for that I used Proofbuddy.com which is free.
