Mongo swears that sometimes it feels like 2 old wheels with a broken hamster and an old guinea pig with 3 legs who thinks it can run like a hamster.

Mongo swears that sometimes they start to look more valuable as a couple of quick entrees than running his computer.

A sorry but accurate picture of Mongo’s computer capabilities/ resources.

It is 16 inches high x 190mm thick x 47cms deep, black with a silver button on the front, wires coming out the back and something that makes whirring and rattling sounds inside.

This thread frighteningly reminds me of Whirlpool; there are plenty of people there measurebating over their PC specs.

Next we'll need a 'whinge about your ISP' thread...

Don't worry, whipper. I was just too lazy to write them all down.

Not really. Most of us into digital will have a very keen interest and reasonable knowledge of these things. Just too lazy to write it all out. Even Mongo is thinking of replacing his hamsters with some high end i7 gear with all the trimmings.

Must say, Richard appears to have a big one

I found i7's 5's and 3's to be too costly on a performance price ratio.

I went with a AMD x4(955 I think in the end).

cost was my main priority and I ain't wasting $1000 on a machine that worth $200 when I walk out the door of the shop!

Can't remember every facet of every spec, but they may be:

    Asus M489GTD-Pro/USB3
    AMD x4-955
8G GSkill ram of some flavour
piddly 220 series Asus branded nvidia card..(BUT!!... I knew I should have gone with an equivalently priced ATI card. this one is ok, graphics speed is unimportant for photo processing).
multiple hdd's (of terabyte sizing, with more to come I think)
AeroCool case(or worthless value!) reasonably cheap considering the quality, and that enormous 40cm fan on the side, but a PITA to add remove hdd's.. should have stuck with Antec!!)

ummm.... what else gets listed in these races??.. OS.. Win7 Pro, but may also install Ubuntu on the next reinstallation if new hdd's come along.
Ooooh! I remember!!.. A mouse and keyboard! I got me a new keyboard a few weeks ago, one of those M$ ergonomic types(came with a mouse too). Kids PC(my very old one) still required a kb, so I had to get myself a new one, after liquid papering the old worn out lettering on that old banger. But I got a new ergo 7000 kit'n'kaboodle keyboard/mouse setup. The mouse is the same as I've been used to for a year or so now, but the ergo keyboard.. if you havn't tried one yet, and do lots of typing(sounds familiar ) you may end up loving this ergo layout .. typing 5000 word replies in 5 mins 24/7!!?? a doddle. The split keys setup gets a little weird at first, but forces you to type correctly and from there, you;re flying like a 5000 word madman on a mission of literary stardom! .. OOOPS!! sorry, I forgot, back onto the topic of the day...
Microsoft Natural wireless Ergonomic Keyboard 7000(plus mouse)
Speakers(old generic distortomatics of some ungodly type!)
lots of cabling... ooodles of the stuff actually... bunny loves it here(she's a cable-aholic! )
24" LG W2442PA(cheapness)... (high on the wishlist of stuff to get very soon. 27" Dell U2711 I reckon, possibly a 24" U2410 as a second preference... funds willing).

everything runs nice'n'fast now, far less waiting than with the old XP3200(AMD) for almost all tasks that tax the CPU.
It seems my 3 legged guinea pig has had a bionic transplant to help him along for the next 7 or so years.

Personally not interested in the specs themselves, as long as the price is at the lowest possible denominator for a given performance rate, I'm happy.
You can get too cheap, and you can also be sucked in to the upgrade to the highest spec syndrome, for no real effective gain.

of course this is from a non gamers POV, so yours may vary a lot from this one.

Hahaha, very nice setups guys! Budget is indeed the biggest in buying a computer I wish I had billions of dollars to waste on them!

    G'day Whipper Snapper + others

    I feel like Mongo -
I have the notion - who cares?
For my part, it's a bog standard $1100 Toshy laptop which runs my entire business records, corro & pix.

Beyond a 500gb HDD, I don't care as to its specs ... for me the main requirement is that it must fit into a 36cms wide lockable cupboard in the motorhome for travelling purposes - and the same location also has to take SHMBO's laptop & doco-scanner too. The locked cupboard also has the on-the-road backup drives for docs & images + software masters on CD. When we get home after each tour, the backups are xfrd to a larger HDD at home

    Regards, Phil

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 with fairly modest specifications but it runs everything I need adequately (Adobe CS5 being the biggest drain). Under the bonnet is a 2.3 MHz dual core processor (pre i3), 500mb HD, 512kb dedicated ATI Radeon graphics and 4GB RAM. It ticked every box on my shopping list. It didn't cost much and I just compared the performance of every laptop in the store under $1000 and this came up the winner thanks to a its very good dedicated graphics card. It was just superseded at the time I bought it and that resulted in great bang for buck. It was a better performer (using that Window's performance tool) than newer machines that were more highly specified so became a no brainer). It absolutely creamed my old 1.8 MHz desktop machine which behaved like a geriatric cripple.

Unfortunately the little blighter didn't want to run the 64 bit version of Windows (it just went into a infinite 'update' after installation) so I only get 3GB of RAM under the 32 bit version.

The screen is crap so I use it with an external 24" HD Viewsonic monitor which is an absolute gem.

I also use a couple of WD 1TB external drives for backup and archival storage. One is an e-SATA drive (a modest performer) and the other a painfully slow USB2.0 drive. A Logitech cordless mouse and an old corded USB keyboard finish off the 'kit'.

When travelling, I take a 250GB 2GB external drive with me.

Olympus Pen F with Metabones Speed Booster and Laowa 12mm f/2.8 or Voigtlander 10.5mm f/0.95 or Nikon D800 with the Laowa 12mm f/2.8. The need to keep in touch with the past is a Nikon Photomic FTn or Nikon F2A and a Nikkor 25-50mm f/4 AI
