It sure is worth getting. But what do you plan to shoot with it? There may or may not be better choices depending what your situation is.

I have one and am very happy with it. It is my first DSLR so I dont have anything to compare it too though. Its easy to use and a great little camera to learn on.

I have it on good authority that the 500D has been discontinued, giving some merit to the rumours of a 600D on the near horizon.
This can only lead to a drop in the price of both the 500 and the 550.

I don't normally advocate waiting for the next new model, but in this case it might be worthwhile.

Hi Paul, compared to a 450D, it is not worth the change. The 450D is a great camera (I had one for about a year, look at some of my early posts including my comp winning photo, they were taken with the 450D). Looking at some of your work, if you want to spend some money you would be far better served buying some better glass. I noticed you were asking about the 70-200 f4, that would go well with your 450D. Take the time to learn the craft with that kit and figure out what is holding you back then assess if you need to upgrade down the track.

I have a 450D, and have considered getting a 500D for video, and the few more MP it offers, but as said a 550D is only marginally dearer, or maybe look at a used 50D if you do not need video...$645 is average price for a used one with 18-55 kit lens, if a different (more expensive) lens, might be worth it.
I have this silly idea, that I should actually go and take photos with all this photography gear I have already accumulated, before I collect any more!

davearnold did you get any pm responses to your comments? I'm thinking of getting either the 500D or the 550 as well. Wondering if I should "just do it" as I'd hate to regret not going the 550 later on. Though now there is talk about the new 600D the 500 and 550 may start dropping more rapidly in price.

Just incase anyone hadnt realised if youre at all interested in video you want the 550d over the 500d.

    From here
Both models can record HD video, but the 550D / T2i offers a wider choice of frame rates: the older 500D / T1i offered HD at either 720p in 30fps or 1080p in 20fps, whereas the new 550D / T2i offers 720p at 50 or 60fps or 1080p at 24, 25 or 30fps. The older model would only shoot video in fully automatic with audio recorded by a built-in microphone, whereas the new model additionally offers manual exposure controls and an external microphone input.
