Nikon D90 twin lens kit.

Hey, just wondering what people think of the Nikon D90 twin lens kit? as im the owner of one.
any tips or anything i should need to kno?

I did get a 50mm 1.8D and the photos really good, they are also a cheap lens to buy

Assuming you mean the 18-55 and 55-200 combo, I have had mine for less than a month and I have been enjoying the experience. I am amazed just what the 18-55 does indoors with normal lighting. The only problem I've encountered with the 55-200 is getting too close to auto-focus. I actually thought the lens was broken until I looked up from the viewfinder to realise how close I was to the subject - lesson learned.

The Nikon D90 is still a very respectable camera and hence perhaps one of the reasons it is not yet discontinued.

The D90 takes fantastic 12MP pictures, reasonable photos at ISO 800 and for home 7x5 or 6x4" prints, perfectly reasonable pictures at 1600ISO. Especially if you use Lightroom 3 or another program to tidy up the noise a little.

The twins lens kit is perhaps not as good as the camera body. I would advise buying the camera body alone and then spending the money on a different lens. The 18-105mm is quite highly regarded for it's range whereas I personally think the 16-85mm VR is a fantastic all-round lens, especially if you pair it with the cheap 35mm F/1.8DX as a fast lens +/- buy a flash later on down the track.

I do not think the 18-55 and 55-200 combo are great lenses. Kit are there to be cheap only.

a 'good' set would be 16-85mm VR + 70-300mm VR
which costs a lot more

Oh man, I loved this camera when I had it and found it very hard to let go when the time came. Tanalasta is right, it still is a very respectable camera and I would recommend it as a learning camera to anyone. It provided me with skills to move from the ease of auto settings to the darkside of manual settings and I have not looked back;-) You will love your time with that little gem:-)

yeah, D90 is a good camera, i really love it. bought it in July last year, feels really good in the hand.

although my twin lens kit that i bought is more like a special deal the camera shop has put together. it's a 18-55 and 70-300.

so i'm missing something between 55 and 70 LOL.

and yeah 18-55 lens is not the best, it has a rotating front element, can't really use a CPL on it, good thing is it has VR and AF-S. the 70-300 is a cheapy one, no VR and non AF-S.

so i'm really looking for some lens to upgrade to; have been thinking between 16-85 or 18-105 to replace the 18-55, and upgrade to a better 70-300 VR

or just replace it with just a 18-200, still haven't made up my mind yet. so many choices

I have the D90 and it is a great camera. Hard to fault with the 18-105mm VR zoom but if you can afford to get it with the 16-85mm, better still.

If the twin lens kit comes with the 18-55 VR lens, I am not sure I would bother. While the lens has a good reputation for a basic kit lens, it has a frustrating rotating front element that makes working with square filters or polarisers a pain. Also, from a play I had using that lens, I wasn't impressed by either the purple fringing or bokeh but these were of similar quality to other basic kit lenses.

The D90 is a great camera and has very few faults. Some weird logic on the controls when in Live View and the need to use the viewfinder blind to make live view meter readings more accurrate and that's about it. Both easy enough to live with for the $$$ the D90 sells for now.

I shoot with the D90 to and have done for the past two years. Very pleased with it's performance but can't comment on the kit lenses as I have not used them.

I did however shoot with the 18-200 for some time which was a great all rounder. I have since upgraded to faster glass and now question why I did not do it sooner!

I started wth a D90 twin kit. after awhile and once you know what you'r doing. (or think your doing like me ). you get the inch to ugprade to better lenses.

I just bought recently after around 15 months with the kit. a 17-50 F2.8 and 80-200 F2.8.

Depends on how far you want to go. certainly a good idea maybe to just go straight to better lenses.

If I had to do it again , I would have gone the 18-200. I actually wanted it at the time I bought my D90 but they were out, I wanted it now kicked in and bough the twin kit instead.

Ive been using the d90 for about a year now, i had the 18-55 and 55-200 kit lenses as well,
theres nothing wrong with the 18-55 at all (so far) but i wasnt to impressed with the 2oo lens so i sold it and replaced it with a sigma 18-200 OS lens. Not a good move, the sigma can take beautiful sharp pictures ( sometimes). in hindsight i should have bought the nikon 70-300 VR instead. lesson learnt.
have to say though that the D90 is still a great camera.

Great camera. The lens kit is a good option if you need the 105-200 range, but if not, get the 18-105 lens instead of the twin kit. The glass in the twin kit is a slightly lower quality than the 18-105. At least that's what I've heard, and is why I chose the 18-105.

I actually use them more on my old D70, which stays in my car for that just in case moment.
The 18-200 is more of an all in one, but which one Nikkor VR or Sigma OS?

i too have this camera. its a great bit-o-kit. the lenses you will want to change later but the boddy will last you a while!

The Nikon 18-200mm is probably the best of the long zooms currently on the market so that's the one to get. Go for the Sigma if your budget won't stretch. Quite frankly, there are few times that I need to go beyond my 18-105mm VR unless it is very long (and that's why I have the Sigma 150-500mm zoom).

Agreed the Nikkor 18-200mm VR is a nice lens and if the buyer doesnt mind the price tag of around $1000 go for it.
But at under $500 the Sigma 18-200mm Os is very tempting.
Like you I have a Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens handy for the long shots.
