Canon 5D MKiii / Sony A7Rii / Canon 16-35mm f 4 L /Canon EF 24-70mm f-2.8 L USM / Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM / SIGMA 50mm F14. ART
I have the Canon 17-55mm its a terrific fast lens, its not a L series, though has a price tag to match.
It could be twice the price of the Tamron 17-50mm ? I would imagine. I am sure there are plenty of members here to help you with that one.
Only drawback for me with the Canon 17-55 mm was its a EF-S lens and I had to buy a EF lens for my 5D Mk 11 full frame camera in May.
I still use the 17-55mm lens on my 40D camera.
I have the Tamron, very Sharp lens,

I just got myself a 17-55, so far I'm very happy with it, but it is around three times the price of a non VC tamron and twice the price of the VC model, Sigma also have a 18-50 and 17-50 OS, the benefit of the sigma's is that they have HSM focusing, not as fast as the canon, but faster than the tamron, not a big deal when shooting stationary subjects, but does help when shooting fast moving subjects.
Which ever one you choose, you'll notice an improvement over your kit lens

Honest CC whether good or bad, is much appreciated.
Love and enjoy photography, but won't be giving up my day job.

thanks for the advice still not 100% sure which way i am going to go though
Probably the biggest factor is price. If that doesn't bother you go with the Canon. It is clearly better than the Tamron, but it is so much more expensive. Lots of ppl seem to have the Tamron and are happy with it. Can buy it grey for well under $400 delivered.
