Adding mist to a photo

Saw the how to at the Light Stalking forum, and decided to try it with one I took on the way to the Queen mary Falls meetup in March 2009. I'm pleased with the result, and will play with it some more, and have filed it in my 'Techniques' folder.

If you come to Bathurst you don't need to add it in photoshop its already there.

Nice Odille, it gives an otherwise ordiary looking shot a compete new dimension for added interest. In fact it really changes the complete mood of the shot. I've bookmarked it to have a good read when I have more time. Thanks for posting.

Yes, it's often already here too, especially with all the rain we're having. It's a handy technique to have in the 'bag' and works better than my mist filter.

Interesting technique, to be honest i don't like adding things that weren't there, but for subtle changes to a photo this isn't too bad.
Though suprised how basic the technique is, just a white gradient mask.
A little tip, when you're painting your gradient mask, rather than black to white, select the black to transparent gradient. This way you can use it mulitple times, hard to explain but you'll see what i mean if you do it.

I was expecting a step at the end that would sort of add a bit of noise to the white mask to make it look a bit realistic.
I tried adding some noise anyway, and if you do it very subtly, i think it improves this technique. It seems too smooth and fake otherwise IMO
(this is when done to a full size image. Small pics for web look ok without noise)

I like looking at Light Stalkings posts and have it on facebook to update me. This looks very effective indeed. I like the suggestion from pmack to add noise to make more authentic. Thanks for sharing.

Doing this with a radial gradient and some experimentation will give me what I want for a certain shot.

i have done this before with varying degrees of success. I used a plugin to with a fog filter.
