So does that add up to 6 hours work for $90? 'Your own time' implies you won't get paid for the processing. So, less than you get for stacking shelves, and you get the privilege of paying for all your own equipment as well.

yip, that's the way I read it - I guess this will be the sort of job you see at a Pixie photo type place in a shopping centre or similar.

sure they post like that, but does anyone actually do it? maybe when they get no replies after 2yrs they'll wake up

that site looks ridiculous, togs pay $10 to offer a quote for a 'small' job that's not only not small, but you may not get picked?

Well at least all of them are offering some money - better than expecting if for free (no sarcasm intended btw), as I've seen adverts for photographers required where the client expects the tog to do the work, provide the work, and then give over the images, and its generally implied that this would be a good move on the photographers part as it "could lead to more work".

As I said no sarcasm intended, but I find it odd that on one hand you're highlighting low rates and misconceptions, while on the other hand suggesting virtually the same approach as the work for free concept

Sure, quite different though. In one I'm suggesting using one free image as a marketing vehicle, as opposed to working for free. I think they are essentially different things.

You know my view of wff, I think it's different really that other thread

I didn't know that site existed - I agree it's very interesting & funny to read though

these types of job adverts devalue photography as a profession (IMO)
but they must get some who are willing to do it or they wouldn't have rates that low ?

I would agree with Kiwi that a freebie as a marketing strategy .... eg. buy a package of prints & get an extra print free,
... but I would disagree with doing free work in the hope of getting a paid gig ... it rarely ever works that way in reality.
however in saying that, they will get what they pay for ...

and perhaps some of the kids who take these jobs will realise they're seriously being taken advantage of (....eventually)

I recently appliede for a photographer position through an agency (from seek) who advertised for an assistant. When at the interview i found out it was basically working for the companies who set up in the shopping centres. The job seemed alright but travel was necessary around queensland and even interstate. The hardest part for me to swallow was a weeks worth of training unpaid and even then there was no guarentee that there was consistent work, which was commision based. Needless to say i said no thankyou

This means, you are a contractor.
So, you get that $30 gross, then you calculate your tax rate (of course marginal based upon annual income for that tax year)
Then you pay your own super 9%
Then you provide your own gear
Then you have little job security
You hope they declare the correct wage bill for their business to workers comp insurer (you are considered an employee if you derive 80%+ of income from 1 source despite being contractor)
If you earn enough to require charging GST, will they pay the extra 10% or they expect you to wear that from your $30/hr (If you charge GST, you then need to lodge BAS on your time and at your cost)

Great offer, I might apply..........then again might fly...

The talent box is actually a modelling agency, but not a good one, they will probably charge aspiring models to update their portfolio etc to make their money. No way near enough money to make it worth any decent photographers while. Service seeking is just people looking for a bargain, useful if you are looking for jobs that pay next to nothing but it will cost you to quote. So if service seeking gets approximately $10 from each person quoting on a Wollongong job (they get around 18 quotes) so they are getting about $180 so 18% for sweet f all. Many businesses responding are obviously running studios with many photographers .... not exactly hiring a principal to do yoru wedding.

When I am looking to create a new look, lighting or trying something new at a wedding I will work cheap (free for a decent looking model). I use Starnow and Model Mayhem to find people looking to update portfolios and then I can use the images as I please. Works really well for me but then I love photography so much I would do it for free.

Thanks for that, I always wondered about those two but could never be bothered investigating them, it was always easier to just mark them as junk mail along with rolex watch, viagra and penis enlargement emails.

You've missed the point. This forum is about the Business of Photography, and this particular topic is about "Photography Jobs".

Its an advert for a supposed real job.

Both areas mean, or imply, employment of some form - freelance or employed.

Your interest in photography, trialling, experimenting, is completely different, and I was not referring to that aspect in any shape or form.

I think you in fact are missing the point, this is very much a part of my business as these more controlled images get me paid jobs, I do them for marketing materials when my objective is my purpose not the clients.

And when do we get to see your work? You have had a lot to say so far on AP, yet we haven't seen a single photo to suggest you can actually take any?

    So back to the topic........

I've actually made four attempts at posting a response to the actual topic, but have deleted my attempt at each time for a very specific reason. I'll try and explain that reason.

First point to make quite sure of, and that is, that I have no idea who Talentbox is, and this has no reference to them.

But its worth noting, so called industry practices that are well known to those who've "been around".

I've been selling my work for 35 years. I'm preempting this response with that comment, becuase I want to differentiate myself that what I'm saying is based on hands on photography experience.

30 years ago, I approached model agencies and talent agencies in Glasgow where I was based, and offered them my services at Actors head shots, and Model Portfolios. And fortunately, that approach resulted in the agencies recommending me to their clients. Of course, they would recommend other photographers to their clients as well. And there was no "kick back" or commission paid back to the agencies as a result of their recommendation.

Move on a decade, and I'm in Brisbane, its 1992, and Im sharing a studio with 3 other photographers - one of them seriously struggling to survive. He gets what seems like is a great job from a modelling agency, who promise him approx 60-80 people a weekend. He would provide Hair and Makeup, and would do approx 15 shots per person - all for $15 per person. Which while sounding ok, because that would be up to $1200 of income (however all the processing, printing, sorting out, delivery - would require him also paying someone else to help him). OK, so what's the problem with this ?
Well the agency were charging $150 per person ! And the more people that they said were suitable for talent/modelling, the better. Simple economics. While my friend was working his butt off for that $1200, the agency simply had to place an ongoing advert in the Brisbane paper classifieds, and would "interview" all of the people - they would earn $12,000 - every weekend.

Note that the Agency - earns $12,000 every weekend. Less costs, and its a nice little earner for them.

Would that agency get their "clients" any work ? Rarely, if ever.
FYI most agencies simply find their clients work, and make a good commission the talent/model fees.

That particular agency doesnt exist any more.

However, the practice (you could consider this to be a scam), is a well known practice, and the Office of Fair Trading do their best, but its too easy, to change the Agency name, or adapt the "practice" a little to tweak it into something new.

Just recently (literally a few weeks ago) I heard of another photographer, unwittingly fall into a similar situation. They were sent individuals from an organisation. Yes it was all prearranged with the photographer. The individuals were promised that the session was a $1,000 session, that they were only paying the organisation, just $450. What was the photographer being paid ? Just $40 per person The organisation argued that the fees they were charging was to cover the costs of their advertising, and office, and staffing costs. Almost 2 decades on, and I was having a bad case of Deja Vu.

Note that the practice, does have many different variables.

While my friend in the 1990's did survive out of the income, he was well aware that those being shot by him were being fleeced, and misled by the agency involved. Personally, I would be running a mile from anything that relies on people who are already desperate to find additional income (and most of them were desperate), being so hugely misled. But thats just a personal opinion.
