Check to make sure the second switch on the side barrel, not the AF/MF, but the other one, is set to the 1.2m-∞ mode. This lets you focus on the whole range to as close as the nearest the lens will allow. The 3m-∞ switch is for long range and distant focusing and the lens will only "hunt" up to the 3 meter mark. This saves precious seconds during a fast action shooting like that in sports.

I have the IS model its a great lens and so much lighter than some of my others lenses.
I shoot with Olympus Cameras.. Sometimes Canon and My iPhone SE 2020
Please show us some of that bokeh loveliness.
I have the IS model too, and it is a versatile lens that I can carry for 9 hours straight without noticing its weight.
