i only started back into photoraphy in January this year. I bought a D5000 with twin kit lenses.
After three months i had sold the kit lenses and bought a Nikon AFS 18-200 zoom and 70-300 zoom.
Both great lenses..What i am saying is buy the body only and spend a bit more and get the 18-200 lens straight up.
i have no complaints with the D5000, but given what i know now, i would have bought the D90. because of the inbuilt AF motor (increased range of lenses) and the better viewing screen.

Any way you can't go wrong with the D5000 twin lens kit..
Just get in and take enjoy your photography..

Going the D3100 myself (will order tomorrow). Despite the lack of lens flexibility, it seems to fit my needs (simple but will scale, lightweight and relatively small). Good luck with the purchase!

Surely D5000. Can't go wrong with this camera for a newb. Learning how to use and operate a camera is very important. D5000 produces very good results. Cheers
