D3000 vs D5000

Hey,
The story here is that I want to get into photography and am looking to get myself an entry-level camera. The two I had in mind were the D3000 and D5000, I've been running around asking people about this camera and was wondering if you have any advise on which to go for and why?

I know the D5000 has HD recording and Live-view(which I've been told only works with video recording), and has a bit better photography at night due to higher ISO range, but is that really worth spending $400 more on it? The option of going for Nikon D90 is not open, its just too expensive for me.

So all in all I am just looking to get one of the two camera's that come with a starting twin lens kit for general photography(I don't know much about photography so I am just learning). Any pointers towards any other model is also appreciated.

you could go for a grey D90... all comes down to your budget. the new d3100 sounds excellent if you can hold on till it comes out.

the D3100 is unlikely to be better than the D5000, moreso an upgrade on several features that lacked in the D3000 The D3000 itself isn't a terrible entry level camera, and according to my Nikon rep, it will continue on at its current low price point until Christmas/after. IMO video recording and liveview aren't really necessary anyway, though liveview has its merits for macro and astrological photography to name a few.
Wait it out for the D3100, pricing is coming out very soon

D90 is only $787 on DWI Digital Cameras
when the D3100 and D7000 are available, expect some good deals on D90 bodies

I have used the D3000 and the D5000. Get the D5000 if you can. The D3000 does not compare. The live does work in "stills" mode but the AF is REALLY slow.

The d3100 is suposed to be available before the end of the month , from the blurb its got the latest of everthing , new techknowledgy ect . So I am waiting to at least see one in the flesh , sposed to be under 1000 with basic lens , if nothing else the d90 may come down to a reachable level .
wait and see , too much reasearch is never a bad thing .

Of the D3000 or D5000, I'd grab the D5000 for sure.

Or, as N*A*M mentioned, there are some screaming deals on the D90 about... is DWI a grey importer? I'm guessing it must be at those prices.

Ah great so now it turns into D3100 vs D5000, do we have any more info on the D3100 vs D5000?
To me it seems to have higher Megapixles but then again I a newb and probs don't know what to look for.

EDIT: Also I wanted to know what Memory cards would be good for general Photography, not really looking to go record HD Movies very often.

I'm not a nikon user - but looking at the DP link [kym posted above] i'd wait a week or three & get the 3100 ... seems like the 5000 in many respects

I have the D3000 and it takes very good photos when used within it's limits. Don't rule it out just yet.

Also can you pls keep me updated on the D3100, I'm trying to research but you probably know more in's and out's than I do.

I have a 5000 but have not had other cameras to compare it too. I am enjoying it, it takes fairly good photos despite my clumsy dial tweeking!!!

No matter what camera you have, or lenses, there will always be something better out there. Learn to use what you have and learning to work within its limitations is what makes you a good photographer, not the latest or greatest gear.

Even with the new D3100 coming out, the D5000 still has some unique advantages.
Nikon Active D lighting: The D3100 and D3000 has just ON/OFF while the D5000 has settings for Auto, High, Extra High, Normal, Low or Off.
Bracketing: The D3100 and 3000 has no bracketing. The D7000 has bracketing as standard.
Articulating Screen: The best layout so far, better than the newer Canon 60D. The hinge being at the bottom lets you take pictures at waist level just by flipping it out. It's like the TLR rolleiflex's of old. Or hold it up high over the heads of people in front of you and you still see the framing because of the swivel screen.
The D5000 still holds up as a very good camera to other newer ones. It won't be getting outdated very soon.
