I have never tried mine with AA batteries, but the length of time I go between charges with 2 Canon batteries never ceases to amaze me.

    2 x BP-511's will outlast the AA's by a long way.

The AA tray is really only provided for use in an emergency where your 511's are flat and you really must get a photo

Thanks for the quick responses. Now, do I stick to genuine canon batteries or try out some third party (allot cheaper) batteries such as phottix?

I used to own about 14 BP511As at one point, 13 of them were 3rd party batteries haha

I found the 3rd party ones to last a bit longer, as they held a bit more power/voltage, and only costed me around $13 dollars each, sorry but I cannot remember what brand they are or what site I got them from, they are Australian made though.

In use I have not found a scrap of difference between canon and third party. I received a bunch of batteries when I bought my 40D and they avhe been fine. Never even thought about using the AA insert - would even know were it is - hopefully in the original camera box...now where is that...

Same same, never needed to use AA's but still carry a couple, the life out of original battery + one 3rd party is surprising. Also, If you decide to run with out grip, AA's wont help you much.
