Lens cap for MP-E 65mm hood

This thread will probably only interest a very tiny percentage of AP members...

If you've got a Canon MP-E 65mm lens, and one of those funny lens hoods Canon makes for it, then you've probably faced the same dilemma that I did... you either have to:

    - take the lens hood off each time you use it (time consuming and very tedious, as it mounts via a very fine screw thread), OR

    - leave the lens hood on permanently but then you've not got any lens cap to protect the lens from dust (though the lens hood does a good job of protect the glass from knocks)...

After some deft measuring of the lens hood's inside diameter (34mm), I recently ordered a $5 generic lens hood on eBay, which fits perfectly and has solved this tiny but most annoying idiosyncrasy...

Link to where the lens cap can be found on eBay...

See pictures below... (sorry, a bit more depth of field would have helped in the first picture)

does the mt24ex still fit on the lens with the hood mounted? i was thinking of getting the hood for the mpe65mm, it probably would help alot with increasing contrast from stray light from the flash.

Yes it does - indeed that is the very reason for the MPE hood's existence, namely to cut out any stray light from the MT24 flash, particularly at high magnification. I suspec that the MPE gets used relatively rarely for photography using natural light alone.

If you scroll down to near the bottom of the page in the link below, you will see three pictures showing how the MPE lens hood acts as a barrier to stray light from the MT24. By the way, the link below is one awesome resource for macro technical info...
