    Portrait lens for sony a700 50mm, 85mm?

I have been borring a friends f1.7 50mm minolta lens for a while but have to give it back so nows the time to get me a good lens

Just wonder what your suggestions might be if 85mm f1.4 better than 50mm?. ive been looking at reviews for the 50mm from sony and 85mm sony CZ T* so far but am still undecided

if someone more knowledgable on lenses can steer me along thatll be cool

Hey mate ... Ive got both, and love them both. Bearing in mind though, im using them on a FF A850.

They are both the same max aperture so thats a moot point in terms of speed, they both have lovely bokeh with the 85 slight ahead, with a little more creaminess, due to the longer focal length, and they are both super sharp. You really cant go wrong with either to be honest.

I think your main consideration considering youre using a crop body is whether you will have the space to shoot with the 85 on the A700. That becomes quite a longish lens on a crop body.

Also, do you shoot a lot where you want to compress your scene ? ie. like bringing the background closer, shoot a lot of models with big noses ?? If so, the 85 might be for you.

The other big factor is obviously budget with the CZ about 4 times the price of the 50.

oh yea ... check out most of my threads in the formal and posed forum. Most of those shots were taken with either one of these lenses or the other.

thanks Bigdazzler i actually have my zoom kit lens 55-200 and i set it to 85mm to see the distance and a head and shoulder shot i only had to be about 2 odd meters away for the 85
I can see in tight places it may be a issue but otherwise not.

I also have a 60mm 1:1 tamron macro so because i have that i was thinking to use it for closer quaters then the 85 for the more space if its better quality glass.

Im going to go check out some of your shots

    thanks mate

I suppose it comes down to one of the lenses is CZ quality and the other is not, if that helps

no sort of mate ... fact.

Carl Zeiss lenses are Sonys Pro Grade lenses, very much on par with Canons L series and Nikons Nikkors. Dont let anyone tell you any different.
