I use silver efex exclusively for my mono conversions. Have tried lots of different ways, but Silver Efex is the one I have stuck with.

As mentioned previously with HDR Efex Pro, you can run the Lightroom version of Silver Efex as a stand-alone program.
I have set it up as one of the 'Edit with...' programs in Photo Mechanic, and it opens and processes the file, then saves the Mono version.
I use Capture NX2 as my main editor, and I really like the Nik software, so I can use it without buying Lightroom or Photoshop.
