Question Lens for League and cricket

    Hi,

I am thinking ahead to my next purchase... hopefully in October. I want a lens that I can sue to photography my son playing cricket and rugby league. I have a Canon 5D so it is not cropped so I need true focal length. I think that I need more than a 200mm but I have never used one so I don't really know. I'd love some advice.

Price... well the less the better. I plan on using a mono-pod but I would like IS if I can afford it.... Not sure of the exact range yet. Have to work on hubby LOL...

    Thanks in advance
    Renee

Something to be aware of, if you decide to go to an "A" league game, they restrict access with lenses over 200mm.

200mm will give you a reasonably good result from the sideline at a regular local match. It is once you get back from the sidelines that it becoms a bit short. The Canon 100-400 has a good rep

You need 400mm for cricket, ues the canon 100-400 seems good for this

    Or a 300mm with a 1.4TC

I use a Sigma 150-500 to take shots of my son and his teams playing AFL and Cricket. As he doesn't yet play in the big leagues the lens being over 200mm isn't a concern.

If I was restricted to a 200mm focal length I would think seriously about stashing a Tele-converter in my pocket. I would trade off the loss of light for the magnification. Less need to crop.

This is what you really need, but when you research the cost....

Maybe hire some lens to try before buying? Definitely need something in 300 - 400mm range as min before trying teleconvertors. If you had a 1.6 x crop camera you could get away with 200mm as min.

I reckon the 100-400 is the go for you ... it is quite slow though at 4.5-5.6 , so the available light will be a factor.
