    New "Landscape 500" Photo Competition

If this is the wrong place - please mods move it - wasnt sure where it should go.

For once I'm announcing a photographic competition for all of the right reasons.

This competition is only open to enthusiasts.

There are limited places and its being produced by someone I know of and trust (Christian Fletcher). I've already had a look over the terms and conditions and I'm happy with them, so I trust will all entrants.

    Here's the link:

    http://www.landscape500.com/

There's some great landscape shooters on here, so please go have a look. Make note of the limited number of entrants ! Just 494 places left. And with over $10,000 in prizes, it looks like a goody to me

$50 to enter, too expensive for me !
I have this silly idea, that I should actually go and take photos with all this photography gear I have already accumulated, before I collect any more!

See some of my photos here.

$50 is not bad really, when you consider if each entrant submits the three photos per entry as allowed there would be 166 entrants/photographers in the comp. There are five major prizes which gives you a 1 in 33 chance of winning one of them. Decent odds in my book .
    Attitude is everything!

I have nothing to do with the competition other than to have offered the organiser some advice on the terms and conditions.

Having said that. $50 too expensive ? Are you kidding ? Seriously it has just a 500 limit on the number of entrants. I believe $50 is the entry fee for 3 images. With the amount of prizes on offer, (value is $10,000) considering how many competitions I check (which is from 5 - 7 a week), thats pretty good.

I guess they have to cover their costs somehow. I can't see my landscapes winning, so I'll stick to the nature stuff, but it has some promise for the landscape specialists.

come on guys and girls - thats slightly defeatist talk (no offence) this comp is for enthusiasts.

How good your lens is isnt the point, its the compostion

I've seen some of your stuff Steve, and you're underselling yourself (IMHO)

You have to be in it to win it.

I found $50 expensive in that you have to enter 3 entries... I could see $20 for one single entry being more practical with a discount of $50 for 3 if you wanted to enter more times, my thoughts also are if you do not find $50 expensive, you may not find $500 expensive and you therefore increase your chances of winning further again.

Looks like it could be a bit of fun. Like that there is a comp targeted at enthusiasts.

50 bucks seriously is not too much to pay I personally feel that it's not about winning it's the experience that counts even if one of the shots get selected in the first few rounds I will be happy well different people will have different targets or goals this is mine.

Do the Judges leave comments even if you don't make it or do they only comment on the winners/contenders

Nice of you to say so, but I take very few landscapes currently and I guess I'm never as enthusiastic about entering old stuff. I may have to start with the landscapes again, but that means getting up early and driving to the best locations. Composition and light is everything with landscapes. It will be interesting to see what wins this one.

Its all so subjective. Do you want to be in the position of saying DOH ! I had something that could have won.

Here's the finalists of (I believe one of the worlds richest photo comps) from the 2010 Moran Contemporary Photo Prize - winner got $80,000 (Dean Sewell):

and guess what ? he won it last year as well !!!

The fact that I can't see anything really special about many of those photos probably means I haven't got a hope. Mind you, I wouldn't say no to $80,000.

    The Landscape 500

Thanks for the support on this William. Everyone who enters will receive a rating of their work. There is a provision for feedback from the judges but due to the number of entries this isn't possible always. You will get either a bronze, Silver or Gold award for the photos you enter and this will let you know where your work stands against others in Australia. So everyone comes away with something you can say. Cheers

Thanks for the heads up William
I've had precious little time for photography for quite some time now and my landscapes leave plenty to be desired, but am thinking I might set myself a personal challenge to enter some comps and with a $50 investment, I would certainly be setting myself a goal of trying to take some quality shots!
