    Nikon D90!!

    .. is due for replacement.

bets are being taken for the name of it's successor

    naming possibilities include:

    D90s
    D90x
    D90.2
D90(a).. (where a = any other alphanumerical prefix)
    D9b ... (where b = any positive integer, such as 1, 2, etc.. eg, D91, D92.. etc)
    D100!! ..(LOL!)

realistically apart from the s and x prefix, they have nowhere else to go!

NOTE: with Nikon's previous history of body replacement every two years, and the fact that the D90 was announced in Aug 2008.. I'm only speculating that it's due for an imminent update.
Considering that the D300s is still active in the line up, a new sensor is 99.9% guaranteed NOT to be a feature, so the odds on the D90s name are something like 0.50c .. all other names are paying more like $1,000,000 ... just be sure to send me your money in small denominations, non successive serial numbers, and neatly bundled into brown paper bags!

BTW! I think the odds on a Collingwood flag for '10 have dramatically shortened in the past 24hours!

The D90 (and its replacement) is probably more important to Nikon economically than any other DSLR model. My bet is that if its not an 's' upgrade which I don't think it would be, the new specs would essentially eclipse most of that of D300s', including sensor. I don't think Nikon have been shy about cannabalizing its own models. And I think D400 will be replaced in 6-12months anyways which would restore the pecking order in DX.
    So I reckon D95 or Dx000 where x is a highish number, maybe 7??
If its just an 's' upgrade then then the real replacement might be replaced with D300s.

    Just a feeling I have:

I can't ever see Nikon in a position where a lower specced model will surpass a higher specced model for 'currently' available bodies.

That is, any D90 to be better specced than a D300 ever would be whilst on the current model list.

I can tho, imagine a D90 sized Fx camera.. kind of like the old EM series camera.

down specced to stay below a specific price threshold, but uber elite in some other manner... fullframe sized sensor(for shallower DOF0, low light, high ISO performance.. etc)

Like the D700 is to the D300, with a lower price premium tho.

What would they call it tho??
May not happen in the D90's lifetime, but as full frame sensors get cheaper, this type of model line up is surely inevitable!

Don't think theyd go with that mate, wouldnt make sense from a technical standpoint, as the market share is currently geared to the APS-C type sensor for this type of camera. I also figure at the current stage that the FF sensor must be costing them more, and that they are likely to gradually introduce it down...or perhaps will just run a 3 FF series and 3 crop series cameras (IE something like a D3, D700 and equiv of a D90 in FF, D300, D5000, D3000, on APS-C, but I can't see them doing that yet). I reckon what they might do is continue on with the D700 sensor once they upgrade that model, and introduce a new camera which runs the old D700 as the mid-range FF variant. Put it in a D90 body or equiv and it would be great . But I think I am just trying to second guess a little too much. But if they planned to release a lower cost FF model, I reckon they might first also spec up the D3 series to the D4 to ensure you get a step down through the models.

Will be interesting to see what happens anyway.

One of the first rumours out, about a year ago, was that the D90 and D300s will be replaced by a single model. If you look at what has been happening, each new lower end camera is essentially 95% of the next model higher up the pecking order.

When the D90 came out, it was 95% D300 in D80 clothing.

When the D5000 came out, it was 95% D90 (with some features the D90 didn't have like the folding LCD) in a body similar to the D60.

When the D3000 came out, it was 95% of the D5000 (just throw out the rotating LCD and live view and there you are) so essentially a D60 in D5000 clothing.

The D90 replacement will be a D300s with a little less processing power and with a rotating high res LCD. There may be a new sensor in there with a few more mp to better compete with Canon's current crop (but I hope not as I would prefer lower noise levels).

Where is the D300s going to go unless it becomes full-frame or gets dropped? A D700 lite seems to be on the cards if it does stay in the lineup. Either that or the D90 doesn't get replaced at all.

Getting very tempting. That's around $200 less than the rebated amount non-grey import.

Go through DDE (DDP parent) and they are asking just 737 for it! Definitely looks like a clear the decks accross the board move.

Hey Arthur, by better specced I mostly meant the 'bling factor' specs that appeal to the mass market. So things like sensor megapixel, iso range, particularly video specs, LCD etc.
The photocentric specs that appeal to more experienced photographers will continue to favour the D300s like build/weather proof quality, vf, metering/compatibility with older lens etc.
I reckon it might even get the D300's AF module unless it's very easy to produce a slightly simplified version of it cos too complicated an AF module might not be a good thing on a D90 class camera. The D400 or watever it'll be called will probably get a new D4 class AF when that appears, perhaps next August.

Peter: depending on how high they push the D90 replacement, the D400 may become a pro DX solution with an intergrated grip like a D2 series body. So in DX u might have a situation mirroring the D3/D700 relationship.
I also think a lite FX solution is due but I don't know if it'll necessarily be low end. If they stripped it of all the bells and whistles and made it small and light but maintained good rugged build (digital FM type concept), it still would command a premium I reckon. I don't see Nikon doing a consumer FX (FX sensor in consumer style body) for the current market IMO.

Too bad I had to buy one in March at around 1700 AUD(with 18-105). Today, I could have got a tripod and camera bag as well for that money. Only consolation I have is that a bird in hand is worth.....
