Cropped body lens option

Hello,

I know there are a lot of threads already with the topic of walk around lenses.

I have a specific question.


I have a 28-105 at the moment. I love the zoom to 105 but I would love to have some more wide angle as well. Especially because I do not own another wide angle lens.


What options for a walk-around lens (for a Canon 20D) are there which starts at 17ish and goes at least till 70-80ish.
Would be especially interested in what you guys use on your cropped body and what experiences you have with your specific walk around lens.

How bout that new 15-85 that comes with the 7D ?? Might find one second hand.

The one that you currently have is a great walk around lens to some...
It has a wider but smaller and lightweight sister, the Canon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 which gives a wider 24mm end. Both are USM and super silent in AF.
It behaves like a 38-136mm when mounted on the 20D.
These lenses are no longer in production and they are best hunted off eBay.
You could also get a brand new EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for around $850 if you look around.
It behaves like a 24-136mm when mounted on the 20D.

Yeap, I'd be thinking about the 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 as well. I have it and it's wide enough and long enough for just about everything I need in a sharp travel and walk-a-around if you get the OS (IS) version then that's a bonus though I have never been in a situation where I have needed OS (even in low light - which I shoot in regularly) with this lens. I normally MF mine and would be interested if users of the more modern edition find the AF to be fast enough not to MF all the time.

Alternatively, you could pick the 10-20mm (11-16, 10-22 or whatever) or 17-40mm which would both be more limited in range for you and somewhat more expensive.

15-85 looks like a nice lens. good quality and price is not too bad.
The Sigma also falls into the exact range i am after. Gets some nice reviews as well....

I would rather have one walk around starting at 17is and going to 80 ish than having my current 28-105 and then an additional wide angle lens (they are all pretty expensive).

Are there any more options in that sort of range comparable?

I dont know what the quality of the Canon is but the Sigma has a stellar reputation and is faster. A lot of people love that little Sigma.

I know zilch about Canon, but can confirm the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 is a very good lens, would not part with mine, well built, sharp all the way from 2.8. Has good flare control.

Sigma sounds better and better...a shame that everybody loves it to much to pass it on, hehe.

Will look around a bit if i can find one 2nd hand.

Any idea how it compares to the 28-105 I have? That is the better one with metal mount.

Don't dismiss the 15-85 Have had one for some 6 months a great lens, good quality, top photos seems to work well in every respect (450D ).

hmmm..ok. read a few more reviews and i think it will be the sigma one. It is cheaper and can compare in nearly all respects to the canon 15-85.

So if anybody wants to get rid of theirs, let me know
