    Gear Breakdown Experience?

What and when was your major gear breakdown experience?
I ask this because I had 2 within a week!
My Canon 24-70mm f2.8 short circuited last Thursday.
My 40D shutter broke down after only 13,000 actuations (it was a back-up) during a gala dinner ball at the Art Gallery of NSW. I had a 5D as main camera, but to know in the back of your mind you only had ONE camera remaining is quite unsettling.

I'm probably going to jinx myself by posting this but with 4 bodies still currently serving and a total of around 120,000 shutter clicks between them we haven't had a drama --- yet.

Same with a multitude of lenses, mostly Sigma, no failures.

At just around 500 shot mark my new Canon 5DMKII packed it in, obscure error messase on screen and failed to shoot, and it had to go back to Canon for repair. It was back in less than a week and now I'm well over 5000 shots without any further problem.

Last week the shutter button failed on my five-week-old 5D MkII. Otherwise (touch wood) I've not had any major or minor breakdowns.
