question about a remote switch

Hi all I have just purchased a 50D as an upgrade from my 50E film camera. I have a remote switch ( a RS 60E3 ) which I used on the 50E. Reading the 50D manual it says I need to buy a RS 80N3 remote switch, just wondering if the old one may work or are digital ones different. Thanks for any input, regards, Jeff

The remote shutter release for your film camera may work, but often the connections have changed as the move to digital has progressed. Hopefully someone with a Canon background can be more specific, but do not be surprised if it will not work.

Thanks Rick, I think you may have answered the question for me, on inspection ( which I should have done first ! ) it looks like the conection is different, and i dont suppose they make adapters. Cheers mate, Jeff

The RS 60E3 has a different connector than the RS 80N3 - you could possibly get an adapter, otherwise you may as well purchase a new one - aprox. $15 on ebay for a non-genuine canon.

Jeff, if you're looking to buy a cheapie from ebay, my suggestion is to buy one of the timer remotes from china,

You can get them for under $30 delivered to Australia. They work very nicely, but throw out the chinese CR2032 battery supplied with the unit and fit a new one as soon as you get it.

Yup - the RS-60E3 has an E3 connector (a 2.5mm stereo plug), while the RS-80N3 has an N3 connector.

If you want a wired remote, then there are plenty of cheap ones on eBay and elsewhere (have a look at the Yongnuo remotes on dealextreme.com for example - this one sells for just USD$4.80 including shipping (reviewed here).

Alternatively, if you want a wireless remote, I like the ones from Phottix - such as the Plato (reviewed here).

It's a shame that Canon keep changing their connectors.

Recently I was lucky enough to pick up a 60-T3 for my film camera including a 10ft extension cable for around $30 - and local. This has a screw in arrangement and is a PITA to attach - good thing they got rid of that connector though
