    Playing with a 300mm f/4 USM

Hired a 300mm f/4 USM on the weekend. These are a few photographs I took. All hand held with a canon 30d

    1. Small town get new restaurant. I think it's from the city, they call it Macdougals or something. 1/250 f/5.6 ISO 100

    2. 100% Cropped taken from the other side of an Aussie rules ground. 1/1000 sec f/7.1 ISO 200

    3. Not cropped 1/320 f/6.3 ISO 200

    4. Irrigation at dust 1/2500 f/6.3 ISO 800

    5. This is some bird that stayed around long enough to try out the lens. 1/320 f/4 ISO 100

As you've discovered, the 300/4L IS is a fantastic lens; very sharp.

I used to own one, but later upgraded to the 300/2.8L IS.

I like your final shot of the bird; gorgeous light, great composition and tack-sharp details.

All great shots. Just a quick Q. Where did you hire the lens from? can you hire lenses from most camera stores to test before you buy?

I was impressed with how sharp the images are, but I don't think my wife will allow me to own a 300/2.8
