They were originally released as a marketing tool during the winter olympics in Canada. Canon gave them to all the Canon Pro's shooting the Olympics. The response was so good that they have been widely available since.

There have been several threads on AP about them.

I got mine from Gifts/n/Gadgets, $38 plus postage. I notice they are down to $32 now! It is very alike, the only give away is the writing for IMAGE STABILIZATION, it is not as heavy and the paint has flaked a bit.

And available for Nikon fans as well now it seems.

24-70 and 70-200 and in typical Nikon fashion they cost more than the Canon ones.

I was gonna order one for myself the other day, but kinda thought what if the paint starts to flake off?
has anyone had their writing or colour flake off or start to fade?
