Hi all,
I am thinking of getting the 270EX flash unit to replace my old Sunpak 24SR flash. Does anyone have one that can report on how good it is and how efficient it would be outdoors etc... I wouldn't mind a 430EX or better but cannot afford it at this stage.

im using a 580 ex2 at the moment, not going to lie its pretty epic. maybe try and find a second hand 580 ex2, could work out alot cheaper
Andrew, I have a 580EX and bought a Nissin DI866 from HK to compliment it. The features and power are almost the same, the Nissin came in at under $300, they are currently listed for around $340 from Honkers. I got mine from ebay seller HKBNS, ordered and paid on a Tuesday, the item arrived on Friday the same week. FWIW it will also sync both as master & slave with the 580EX.

Thanks for the info, I will look around for a second hand 580ex but don't think many people would part with such a good piece of equipment. Thanks Phil for the links, that flash looks pretty good, will see how we go, need the US$ to improve now, they might come down in price then.

Andrew when the dollar was up the price was $300 so they're only likely to drop back to that figure. The DI866 compares very favourably to the 580EX, the user menu interface is IMO better than the 580EX, mechanically the Nissin sounds a little agricultural compared to the 580EX.
On the DI-866 you don't have the ability to adjust the flash settings from an on camera menu as you can with the 580EX (from memory, the ability to adjust the flash via the cameras menus is limited to the higher end Canon SLR's such as the 5DII, 7D and 50D).

Yep, I think that is right in regards to flash settings via the camera, on my old rusty (yep not a spelling mistake) Canon 400D the only thing I can change is the flash intensity, even then I think that is only for the on board camera. Maybe one day in the future I can afford such equipment but for now, I am looking for more work to fund my already over priced Hobbies, and it's getting worse
