I have the tamron and cannot fault it.

I use a 50mm f/2.8 macro (SAL 50M28) lens for really close up work and I use the same lens for portrait work which makes it a very versatile lens in that respect but the 100mm will allow you to shoot macro subjects from a greater distance. The lens cost around $800but it's worth it for the fine detail that it is able to capture as well as it's versatility.
