My thoughts are that if you were happy to budget the amount for the 50 - 500 then you would be better served with 2 good quality lenses rather than just the one.
There have been quite a few discussions on here in the past about how long a lens you will need for wild life in Africa and then what sort of lens that you will need for scenery and general closer range shots.
Seeing as I am the sort of person that doesn't really go for the "all round" lens solution I would probably look at the 120-400 and then spend the "leftover" cash on something like a Tamron 17-50 and worry about the focal length gap between the lenses another day.
