    Confused

I have tried to get my head around lens and their differences.
    Canon EF18-55 or
    Canon EFS 18-55

Does the S series lens mean that their is no crop effect on say 7D

In other words the EFS lens are made for 1.6 crop and you get the 18-55

I'm not sure crop is the correct terminology. I have looked through many sites and cannot find an answer. Cheers Brian

The S series lenses cannot be placed on full frame bodies, like the 5D/7D etc. They are only for cropped sensor bodies.

In addition you'll get a 1.6x effective field of view, not a 18-55mm FF view.

    Slight correction,
I think Rick meant 5D/1D etc

    EF-s lenses will fit a 7 D as it has a APS-C sensor ( crop sensor)

Yep 7D is a crop sensor so either will work

Just to throw a spanner into the works, a 17-40mm L is an awesome lens if you worried about upgrading to Full Frame later on

Focal length never changes - 18mm is always 18mm, regardless of whether its EF or EFS mount.

EFS lenses will only mount on 1.6 crop cameras, not full frame cameras. EF lenses will mount on both crop and full frame cameras.

Once mounted on a 1.6 crop camera, both EF and EFS lenses will give you a field of view which is equivalent to 1.6x the focal length, ie 18-55 is equivalent to 29-99mm.

Linked below is an online tool from Tamron which allows you to compare various focal lengths when mounted on both a full frame ("film camera" per the site) and crop body ("digital").
