its about time they added IS, longggg overdue for this lens

I find it funny how many ppl choose this lens, and say that the f2.8 aperture will negate the need for IS on the 24-105 by using a higher shutter speed - too bad they cant even hand hold it at f2.8 in low light at diff shutter speeds - so this will be a major bonus for anyone using this lens now.

If the price difference from the mark 1 to mark 2 in the 70-200mm 2.8 is anything to go by, I would guess the 24-70 IS would be priced around $2.5k-$3k. ....

I'd pay maybe 2200 ... thats ~$500 premium on the current model.

If this lens finally appears, I won't need to keep both the 24-70 and 24-105 I have. Hopefully the funds from selling them both will be enough for the new lens.

And that is issue I'm having I need better low light but to fund it I would need to sell the 24-105 to get one.

How else (but for the upgrade cycle) will they extract more money from us?

I tend not to pay much attention to rumours. People have wanted a 24-70/2.8L IS for years.

    Currently Canon offers a 24-70/2.8L and a 24-105/4L IS.

The former has been around since 2002 and the latter was introduced in 2005.

Annoyingly, both lenses have something desirable which the other lens lacks.

    • The 24-70 has f/2.8, but lacks the extra reach and IS.
    • The 24-105 has the extra reach and IS, but lacks the brighter aperture.

If Canon were to introduce a 24-70/2.8L IS, it could quite possibly cannibalise the markets for its existing lenses.

Sure, Canon has 70-200s in two f/stops, and both with the choice of IS.

The release of a 70-200/2.8L II IS didn't make much sense to me, as there's nothing wrong with the first version. Perhaps it is due to the continued growth in sensor resolution and the possibility that sensors will eventually out-resolve lenses.

Will the introduction of a 24-70/2.8L IS cannibalise Canon's existing 24mm L zoom markets? Interesting question, and only time will tell.

If the 24-105 reduces to a $1200 street value, the 24-70 at $1600 and the 24-70 II at $2400, there will certainly be a market for each.

I'd rather they do the 10-22mm in a f/2.8L it's long overdue for an overhaul.

I cannot see Canon ever giving an L designation to a lens (EF-S) which cannot be used on its flagship cameras (EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds).

    I agree ... the 10-22 efs is already an L lens .... 16-35mm

It has the equivalent framing of the 16-35/2.8L II, yes; but it doesn't have the build of an L.
