    Strobe gels

    Hi Guys,

With my kangaroo valley trip coming up, and me wanting to shoot some star trails .. I'm wanting to illuminate some of the objects in the picture.

I've had a look at some strobe gels, but Im a little confused with the 2 types this place sells:

    http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod6611.htm

    http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/prod6612.htm

Does anyone know the difference between the Honl Colour Effects Gel Filter Kit and the Honl Colour Effects Gel Filter Kit

I'm wanting to achieve something along the lines of: http://dondailey.files.wordpress.com..._1782blog2.jpg

    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Phil

    Hey,

Can't see what you're trying to achieve because the link is broken, shortened even.

Honl Colour Effects Gel Filter Kit looks to be the best kit, the other seems more for fixing your flash so it matches ambient light sources.

Remember you can use cellophane and a bunch of other things for gels.

    Thanks for the heads up!

I might see what I can make out of some cheap cellophane before diving in for the kits.

15 bucks and some velcro and you are good to go:

It's horses for courses on the correction versus the effects gels. The correction gels are designed to get the flash to match ambient. Lets say you are shooting in a room lit by incandescent light with a flash. Your ambient light is orange, and the light from the flash is white. Now you have a white balance problem as you have two different coloured light sources in the same scene.

Bang a CTO (colour temperature orange) gel on the flash, and now both your sources are orange. Set your white balance to "incandescent" and you have a nice neutral colour across the scene.

Same theory with fluorescent light and the green gels.

You can of course use those gels in order to mimic a particular sort of light. Want to make it look like your scene is being lit by incandescent light? Use a CTO gel, and position your flash where you think that the light source would naturally be in the scene.

The "effects" gels are precisely for what the name suggests, i.e. to get some special effects into your scene. Want a splash of pink on the background? Put a pink gel on and aim your flash there.

I used cellophane in all of these shots. I was experimenting...

you can see them on my flickr site in this set - http://www.flickr.com/photos/emmarho...7623217428518/

shows you what you can do with cellophane!

I have a couple of sets of the Rosco gels

They work well, but be warned, the darker gels will melt if you use your flash at 100%

I had to reduce the power on the flash, and flash several times to avoid that happening

    Hope that helps
