There are always two people in every picture.. the photographer and the viewer.
Pete has given you THE site. A word of advice though - don't just read it. Actually take the time to do the exercises, and in about a week you'll be able to take a fairly stunning portrait with either a bounced flash on the camera or a $30 shoot through umbrella and a stand.
I agree with all of the above, it really is an amazing site.
Lighting 102 along with all of the assignments is the way to go.

Im getting a decent flash soon for my birthday and hopefully a YN-460II as a slave so ill need to learn how to use it properly. This is the kind of site I need and I actually think I did bookmark it ages ago for future reference. Cant wait
