What's the AF on that L with the 2x mounted?

The 300mm f/2.8 is going for about $6K even on the grey market.

I walked into the shop to buy the sigma 150-500, but instead walked out with the canon 100-400, sometimes i miss not having 2.8, but having twice the focal length makes up for it, so far i'm very happy with my decision.

Honest CC whether good or bad, is much appreciated.
Love and enjoy photography, but won't be giving up my day job.

Firstly I'm using the 5Dmk2 so AF is not the best to start with. I also set my AF to it wont hunt when it doesn't lock on to something straight away.

If the subject is at one end of the focal range and the camera is at the other nothing will happen. In cases like this I'll give the camera a hand and manually focus just to get close and then let the 5D do the rest. Usually I prefocus the lens to where I think the bird will be. Manually focusing is very easy with the big 300mm but I almost alway lets the auto focus finish the job. AF is still quick on stationary birds and a little slow when it comes to BIF shots. The IQ is out standing with this combo.
