Firstly I'm using the 5Dmk2 so AF is not the best to start with. I also set my AF to it wont hunt when it doesn't lock on to something straight away.
If the subject is at one end of the focal range and the camera is at the other nothing will happen. In cases like this I'll give the camera a hand and manually focus just to get close and then let the 5D do the rest. Usually I prefocus the lens to where I think the bird will be. Manually focusing is very easy with the big 300mm but I almost alway lets the auto focus finish the job. AF is still quick on stationary birds and a little slow when it comes to BIF shots. The IQ is out standing with this combo.
Hi Everyone thank you for all the info sorry it took so long to get back had no internet for 2 weeks. I think I will keep the 300 f4 and TC and just try and get closer as the hit I will take on selling the 300 seems to great at the moment. Hope you allhave a great day Cheers Dave
