Just caught the 'L' virus (200mm prime) - warning highly contagious

Just reporting my first foray into the world of L glass from which I fear I will not return.

Was intending like many others for my first L lens to be the 24-105 f4 which is still on the shopping (wish) list but I picked up a mint condition 200mm 2.8 IIL for $700 which I could not resist. I have used a friend's one of these before and was blown away by the IQ and while it doesn't have IS it is amazing quality for the price.

Will post some picks soon but keen to hear about other people's experience with this lens.

I think I'm in love.

Just starting to process some test shots from my first weekend with the lens. This below is by no means the sharpest - partly because I took it at 1/125 handheld (no IS) and partly due to the number of beers I'd had - but I like it and it is amazing that it produces these colours and contrast staight out of the camera.

Comments and tips welcome.

I hear you for sure. Have just bought a 70-200 f4 L series and it has not been off my camera since I strapped it on. A bloke at work today commented on a image I had up about the colour, sharpness etc - I am now saving hard to purchase another. L-virus is highly contagious once you come in contact with it.

Welcome to the world of the L series: and it is addictive definitely. I would have gone with the 24-105mm first too but I fully understand you going for at 2.8 at that price, nice work. Any of the 16-35, 17-40, 24-105 or 100-400 L series are very good lenses which you will no doubt be looking at after getting your first L. It is not just a fashion statement, these are actually all top quality lenses well worth the investment.

haha its a great virus to have! Loving 24-70mm 2.8, its a great indoor/portrait ##### and the 17-40 is a great landscaper

I went the same route as Kev, 24-105 and then 100-400, as I'm happy with my sigma 70-200, I'm not sure what's next, but a big prime would be nice, as I'm really enjoying wildlife ATM, won't be enjoying the price tag that comes with that big prime though.

How'd you get so close to the players?

How close were you to the action? For a shot sans crop you must have been very close.

Hi thanks for looking. Could get reasonably close to the sideline at Canberra stadium (maybe 10m) so was able to get in this tight even with a 200mm on a crop sensor.

I got some good constructive critisism on this and a few other shots from that night in the 'Sport' forum. As a rugby fan I quite like the action and varying points of interest among the players as each looks to their respective next move but I understand some of the valid points about it not being a classic close face or ball focus - I have a long way to go for that but its fun.

I have the 70-200f2.8L is, but have resisted (with great difficulty!) any further exposure to the L virus; until yesterday when the 100-400IS arrived... I am now terminally ill... when (and not if) i start considering a prime lens my wife will kill me if the disease doesn't...
