CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System)

I to am interested. done quite a bit of reading and had a look at a system a while back at Photo Continental (don't have it anymore) and it looked quite good. But I didn't like the output on gloss paper. Not sure why they don't stock it anymore, maybe it wasn't as good as they said with prolonged use.

Either way, I send my prints of the a printer now (digilab.com.au in winsor) and am very happy with the result, and my A4 printer at home just does normal printing and not photos anymore (photos at home are too expensive).

I have heard of these guys http://inkme.com.au/web/epson_cfs.php but dont have personal experience with their product or any CISS for that matter. But I am in the market for one ad was looking to buy a canon printer that is compatible with the above system

Kiwi just remember the old "Oils aint oils Sol", from the research I've done the main problem with continuous ink systems is the quality of the ink as regards longevity of the print.

However if you can find one that uses quality inks then you may be on a winner. Just consider the necessity of profiling for your printer and ink, cost of unit, and cost of quality ink.

Do a Google on Printer ink testing, I was looking at a site a few months ago (can't recall it now) that tested photos printed with different printers and inks, some very interesting results that made me decide to stick with the Canon Chromalife 100 inks.

Bill hit the nail on the head.

The Rihac system (which I do have) uses dye based inks which have a severely limited hang on the wall or put in the album life - about 7 years max but after about 12 months its does start to become noticeable on the wall.

This might not mean much if your already using a dye based ink - your already using a high fade product.

If your using an Epson printer, particularly those in the "R" class (R1800, R1900 yadda yadda), these printers use the Ultrachrome inks which are all pigment based. Supposedly guaranteed for 70 years in an album or about 50 on a wall but more likely 40-50 years in an album.

For large quantity good reproduction where you don't need good life expectancy the Rihac system is very good and an economical way to go.

BTW you cant get pigment inks for refilling cartridges due to the fact that unlike the dye systems, the pigment ink has a tendency to solidify on contact with air and any air entering the printer head can seriously damage the unit. Note many of the high end Epson printers do NOT use the replaceable cartridge as the print spray head. If you clog it up its really going to cost you.

PS I have now seen pigment inks but due to the issue with air and solidification as previously mentioned I would be very hesitant to use them.

Why printers need ICC (International Colour Consortium) profile?
&Why Photographers use ICC profile?

To achieving Accurate and Beautiful prints with any printers and different papers, You need to use different ICC profile.

Some ink suppliers said that "Our ink are match to manufacturers and no need any ICC profile".

BUT everyone knows that also big manufacturer such as Epson, Canon use different ICC profiles for different paper.

Photographers can create own ICC profiles....

Just reviving this to ask if anyone is using the rihac system with their Photo Pro Pigment Inks? I have bought myself an Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4530 All-in-One Printer, mainly for papaer printing of documents, scanning documents etc, not as a photo printer per se, but thought it would be good if I could do small items like postcards etc on it from home. I was planning to buy the rihac inks to use, and the Pigment pro is supposed to be good for 70 years.

Any feedback most appreciated.

I've had no experience with those particular inks, but I've been using the Rihac system with a Canon MG5150 since 08/2011 and it has performed flawlessly. The printer in networked with 7 users, my wife and I are both teachers, 3 kids in high school and 2 at uni, so it gets a LOT of use. I was paying about $100 a set for Canon cartridges which typically lasted 2-3 months maximum. With the Rihac system we use about $70 worth of ink a YEAR, so the savings in consumables is massive. While most of its use it documents, I've also used it to produce prints up to A4 size, some of which have been hanging on the walls for well over a year without any visible deterioration in quality.
