I bought a Lumix P&S 12.1Mp only a week ago. I don't know many professionals that wouldn't have one or two. I use it all the time for location shoots and pre-shoot line-ups to get perspective and light values. A P&S is much easier to handle in pre-production when you need to get data to a client on the run. For instance, I could go to Longreach and take location shots, transmit them to a client directly and get a yea or nay without moving. The big advantage is I'm not burdened with 20 Kilos of DSLR or if I'm in a volatile situation (airborne or back of truck) there's little risk if the cameras damaged. And if you're very clever you can get some spectacular shots on a P&S.

i use a compact alongside my main cameras for weddings but it gets little work apart from this. it is great for detail shots, and i prefer using it over macro's on larger cameras. the compact allows very close up shots with a larger dof than i can get using a macro.

I have a my DSLR [400D] and a P&S [IXUS 80IS]. P&S gets used more than SLR does, as the IXUS lives in my handbag, and is my 'everyday use' camera

I've got a 40D and a G7. Use the 40D a lot more than the G7, but I'm going to start carrying the G7 again when I'm not planning on taking shots (when I go to work etc) just in case. Didn't dawn on me to do so until I read this thread. Used to carry it everywhere when I didn't have the dSLR.

I have a little casio P&S. It takes pretty good photos for a cheapie!
As much as I love my DSLR sometimes I just don't want to lug it around I've got 4 kids and the assorted paraphernalia that goes with them so sometimes it has to stay home.

I have a Panasonic TZ7 which is a great allrounder. I use it alot when travelling for work and for quick snaps of the kids or going down the beach.

    Like Kym I have original box brownie, 3 Slr's, 3 DSLR's and a P&S.

The point and shoot can work wonders especially for macro shots that I can't achieve with my DSLR due to not having a macro lens.

I just got a p&s for Christmas as I really wanted one for those times where taking the Dslr just isn't possible, I.e drunken nights out! And where the photos don't matter so much. The quality is nothing compared to the dslr but very handy at times.

You couldn't imagine how many parties my DSLR has been to. No place for a young P&S.

I have an Olympus E3 DSLR and an Olympus mju810 P&S which lives in my briefcase. The E3 is a beautiful camera, but is just a bit too big to cart around everywhere.

I also have an Olympus E300 which is on semi-permanent loan to a mate in Gympie and a little Olympus mju500 which is slightly bent, but still works..... sort of!

And down the bottom of my cupboard is a Nikon F50D film SLR which I don't use any more.
    Cheers

    Larry

I have both. Most of my shots are from P&S since I only got a SLR a few months ago. My P&S is good since it is the size of my phone and is good for quick shots, places such as festivals and clubs and when I don't feel like carrying a SLR around on public transport all the time.
    CC greatly appreciated

I try to take my 450D everywhere but when I can't I bring my teeny Canon A590 IS with CHDK installed, its a terrific little P&S when the light is good.

I use my P&S all the time - it's a Sea & Sea DX-1G (Ricoh GX100 in a housing) - as it's my set up for my underwater photography . I think I get some half decent photos with this set up.

I also have a Canon 450D for my topside photography. I can't see myself going the full DSLR for underwater photography as I don't have the money to go a complete system - roughly another $7000 + if I wanted to use my 450D underwater.

There is a big 'them & us' in underwater photography between those with DSLRs and P&S systems - personally I think it's just the DSLR users trying to justify the expence of their systems

I bought a P&S before I went on atrip to Europe at the end of 2008. My son also went on a trip to Europe at the same time and he had just bought a DSLR. When we got back home we compared our images - I immediately went out and bought a DSLR (enough said)
