    Ancient Forest

Dating back to the beginning of the Mesozoic age trees that belong to the genus Araucaria are often referred to as living fossils. Their massive trunks can easily reach heights of 60 or more metres and the trees often emerge from the canopy beneath them. Reaching above the canopy their whorled branches are often a distinguishing feature in the areas that they grow. Although the species belonging to this genus are relatively widespread their local distribution is often restricted. I like this photo because although it was taken in the highlands of Papua New Guinea it is reminiscent of similar scenes that can be seen in my home area of South-eastern Queensland.

    Cheers,
