    Fill Flash for Birding

Can anyone recommend some settings for Birding,I use a 450D,100-400mm and a 580EXII.I know it`s a general question but I`d like somewhere to start with the flash and camera settings so I can then fine tune them to suit the circumstances I find myself in.
